Dartmouth Lower Ferry uses a 20ft Dainton shipping container as a floating workshop on its mooring pontoon, keeping everything needed for ferry repairs close at hand.
Shelved out with spare parts, ropes, electrical equipment, oils, fluids and tools, it also has solar panels on the roof to power the fuel transfer pump, a generator for jobs such as welding, and timed lighting to illuminate the pontoon and help the ferries come alongside in the dark.
It means that if there’s a breakdown, the team has what they need right there on the river, without having to travel back to the main workshop.
